What to Expect:
Some teens ask to come to counseling after something challenging happened in their life. Others come to counseling when things have become overwhelming at school or home or when worry feels like it is taking over. Other times, someone in a teen’s life noticed that they were having a hard time and signed them up for counseling. No matter the reason, I am excited to meet you!
It is helpful to know what to expect when you come to counseling, so that you can feel prepared for the first day.
The first time we meet, we will spend most of the time getting to know each other. If you feel more comfortable, your parent is welcome to join us. I have one main rule on this first day: you only answer the questions that you feel comfortable answering even if that means 0!
I normally meet with teenagers in my room with all the toys. I don’t expect you to play with them, but it is handy to have art supplies and fidgets nearby even if you prefer to talk the whole time. If you prefer the toys, be my guest!
There is no ‘right way’ to be in counseling. just show up as you are and I will handle the rest!
Common Questions
-
If you don’t have the right words or don’t know why you feel the way you do: You are in the right place! Part of my job is supporting you in finding the words. We may find the words through talking, making art or creating stories in the sand tray.

This is an important question! I talk to parents/caregivers before we start counseling to let them know that your privacy is important. Who would want to talk to an adult that immediately tells their parents everything they say? I do meet with your parents/caregivers every now and then to give them ideas on ways to support you. I check with you before I give updates to parents so you can give permission on what is shared.
If I am worried about your safety or someone else’s safety then I would have to get another adult involved. I would let you know if I have to do this so that you are ‘in’ on it with me.
