Sandtray Therapy in the University Area of Charlotte

Rewrite Your Story in the Sand

Traditional talk therapy hasn’t done the trick for you. You know what to do or how to solve problems, but talking it through again and again just hasn’t helped. Maybe it's time to try something different and get in the sand.

Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray therapy is a creative and unique approach to processing emotions and experiences. By creating scenes in the sand, you can explore your inner world in a tangible, visual way. This method helps you see things from a new perspective and uncover insights that might be hard to reach through words alone. Sandtray therapy provides a safe space to express yourself creatively, without the pressure of finding the right words.

What to Expect

In a sandtray therapy session, you'll be introduced to sand, water, and miniature figures. I'll support you in creating ‘worlds’ in the sand that reflect your past, present struggles, or future worries and hopes. There’s no right or wrong way to build your sandtray scene. After you build your scene, you may choose to further process your creation using words or art. This process can help you gain new insights, work through difficult emotions, and find new perspectives in a safe and non-judgmental space.

Common Questions

  • Adults are welcome and encouraged to give sandtray a try! It's a powerful tool for exploring emotions, processing experiences, and gaining new insights, regardless of age. Adults often find that the hands-on aspects of sandtray help them access and express feelings that might be difficult to put into words.

  • No worries! If you are interested in sandtray, just let me know about your sensory needs and we can change the sand to another texture that is a better fit for your needs.

  • No, there is no prior experience or skill needed. In sandtray you will use figures from my office to create worlds. You only have to select figures and place them in the sand.

  • Sandtray therapy is flexible and can be adapted to all ages and many types of therapy. All therapy modalities that I use, including EMDR, can be done with the support of the sandtray.
